Artful Blogging Feature!

What a week! I have been so touched by all the kind comments and messages I've received after being in the "Saturday Spotlight" over at Must Love Junk. Thank you, again, Susan and Kris!
Bloggers and blog readers are just the best, and I'm so grateful for your kindness to me! As I said in the post, medicine to my soul.

When Artful Blogging contacted me last July about including Creating a Life in an upcoming edition, I was thrilled! And then I was scared.

I had only been blogging about 9 months, and I was nowhere near believing that any publication would be interested in my photos, let alone THIS publication.

I was getting ready to leave on our summer road trip to southern California and there was a pretty short deadline to write an article and provide them with the photos they requested.

I'll be honest, it was pretty stressful at the time. I did not feel confident about what I wrote, but I hadn't gotten any feedback about it. Off to California I went feeling pretty insecure about how it would all come off in print.

My article was supposed to be in the Winter issue, but in late August I was contacted and informed that they had over booked the issue and my article would be one of the ones they intended to bump to the Spring issue.

Honestly, my own self-doubt {anyone else ever struggle with that?} had me thinking that they just didn't like the article or the photos after all and I wouldn't hear from them again.

In October I was contacted requesting some different images and the rest, as they say, is history!

I shared my surreal moment of having a first look at my artist's copy this week over on my Facebook page.

I am honored and completely humbled to be included in this issue with so many talented blogger artists. Such a dream!

Thank you so much to Jennifer Jackson Taylor and Christine Stephens  {former and current managing editors of Artful Blogging} for the thrill of seeing Creating a Life in the pages of your beautiful magazine!

The spring issue of Artful Blogging is available February 1st and can be ordered here.

Time to come down from the clouds and welcome a new week of possibilities.

Happy Monday, friends!

Vintage Door Valentine Mantel

**Hi guys! I'm super excited to be in the "Saturday Spotlight" over at Must Love Junk this weekend! I would love it if you would pop over there for a visit!**

And now....

Today on Creating a Life: "How to Avoid Unpacking From a Trip"

The last time I came back from a trip to California, I got some sudden inspiration and created this one evening.

When I should have been unpacking suitcases.

This week, it's happened again. I really didn't mean to start on a project last night. Honest. I was just going to move one little thing, and well...you know.

Are you sensing a theme here? I'm not really sure if it's because I've been "project starved" while away from home, or simply because I hate unpacking and am looking for any excuse to put it off!  So last night I thought I would just tweak one thing on the faux mantel wall. Just one, I tell ya! :)

We weren't home over Christmas so I left pretty minimal Christmas decor, which I've been putting away bit by bit since we got home last Thursday.

A little over a year ago I created a little backdrop for the electric fireplace from some parts of an old crib and an imitation brick panel that was left over from our kitchen remodel at our previous home. {You can see how I did it here}

Well, last night I got a sudden urge to bring my vintage door down from my bedroom and see if I could set it up behind the electric fireplace instead of the brick panel I've always used. Simple.

Here's a bit of the conversation between me and 16 year old, Mikayla, as she is less-than-willingly helping me carry it down to the living room:

Me: Thank you so much, Mikayla. What would I do without you?
Mikayla: Um....NOTHING!

Everyone's a comedian around here.

Are you ready for the shock of how terrible it looked in here last night while I was doing my "one little thing"?

You know I didn't have to show you this, but I thought it might make the "after" look better : )

Back in November, I showed you a Junk Style Photo Board {here}
that I created from an industrial type wall shelf I picked up at a thrift store. I suddenly remembered I had the brackets from that shelf, and decided I would try replacing the wood shelf brackets that had been holding the mantel shelf.

Kind of looks like funny little arms holding the shelf, but I like it!
I was really happy to discover that not only did the door fit perfectly between the bracket holes...

...but the rustic wood plank I've been using as the mantel shelf fit perfectly into the space in the new brackets in front of the vintage door! I love it when that happens.

Thankfully, everything is looking a little more cheerful in the morning light, despite my giant brown beast of a sectional.

Well, I figured I had gone this far, I might as well go ahead and add a little Valentine decor to the mantel, right?

My parents have really been on my mind so much, with going through my dad's cancer treatment and all that comes with that. I decided I'd do a little tribute to them on the mantel.

I hung my coffee filter wreath from the chippy door and added a vintage style Valentine image. On either side of the wreath I tied two handmade chalkboard tags, using a stencil for the X and O.

On the left, I clipped an old photo of them to a rusty toolbox latch. In front of the photo I hung an old heart shaped cookie cutter.

On the right, I put one of their wedding photos in a photo holder I made from a vintage decanter lid, a shaker top and some wire.

They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in September!

You can read a bit about their love story here

Remember the vintage sheet music trees I made at Christmas time? I  just flipped them over to turn them into paper cones to hold brown coffee filter flowers (lazy, I know). I tucked them into an old flower pot and added a little handmade "hope" flag on a wooden dowel with an old drawer handle for the topper. Hope is huge when you're fighting a brutal enemy like cancer!

My mom has been so kind to pass a lot of her vintage costume jewelry pieces on to me, including these metal monogram pins with their initials. I placed them on the top I made for my DIY Cloche, created from old light fixture parts.

I just love it when I'm cruising along getting all my photos and then realize you can see my pink polka-dot pajama pants in the glass! Oh well, we aren't taking ourselves too seriously over here anyway.

On top of the fireplace, I placed a nest that a friend gave me for Christmas {love it!} on an old china platter. Inside the nest, two painted heart stones I picked up recently from a darling local shop that I'll be taking you on a tour of very soon!

Love you Mom and Dad!

So after looking at this for awhile, I decided that the chalkboard tags on either side of the wreath were reminding me of a pair of 1980's earrings.

So I moved them to the same side : )

I have a fun announcement to share soon! Can you guess what it is? If you follow my Facebook page you may have already heard :) Tell you all about it over the weekend.

Oh, and my suitcase? Still sitting on my bedroom floor. Full.

I appreciate you coming by today!

Vintage Chandelier Help?

About 7 years ago {when I was still married and working on sprucing up our family's home} I really wanted a chandelier for the master bedroom.

One day while puttering around one of my favorite thrift stores, I spotted a vintage brass chandelier on the floor amidst some other 'junk'. It was missing its crystals, but it was so pretty and the smaller scale I was looking for. I just knew it had potential.

The price was very reasonable-I believe they were asking around $30.00-but I got it for $20.00.  I took it home, ordered some inexpensive replacement crystals online and my husband hung it in our bedroom. I decided after it was up that I really wanted it to have a distressed white finish, so yes, I stood on the bed and painted and wiped and painted some more until it had just the look I wanted. I loved it!

When I decided to move from that home during our separation, I really wanted to take my chandelier, but for reasons too long and boring to share, it just couldn't happen. This isn't a sob story. In the scheme of things, we are just talking about a thrift store light fixture, right?
But I was a little sad that I had to let it go. And my grandmother's bench. And a darling vintage buffet. But I digress : )

Guess what? This Christmas, my brother gave me another vintage chandelier!

It needs the candlestick sleeves, but most of the original crystals are with it.

Here's the "help" part-
It got broken on our way home from California. Ghaa!

When we left southern California on Wednesday I had it wrapped in a blanket on the back seat of my van. We stopped overnight in Cedar City, Utah where the temps were well below freezing. Thursday morning, as we were loading up for the second leg of our drive home to Colorado, my six year old son forgot what was under the blanket, and fell on top of it.

When we got home, I unwrapped the blanket and this is what I found.

One decorative arm and one wired arm were broken off.

{Sigh}

I'm speculating that the freezing temps in the van overnight caused the metal to be extra brittle and snapped when he put his weight on it.

So what do you think guys, can you help me?

I can't spend a lot of money on this, so I'm sure hoping there is some way to glue the pieces back on. If you have ever repaired anything similar to this, or had to glue metal together, I would LOVE it if you would share your experience or give me your best advise for how to approach this repair!

This is one that's hanging in my brother's vintage craftsman home and what mine will look like when she's put back together : )

I'll be back soon with a fun tour of a darling shop near my home town!

Confused in California

So, just what does "winter" mean in southern California?

Coming from Colorado, my brain tells me I should be feeling freezing temps and seeing snow in January.

I was born and raised here. I should have remembered this feeling, but after nearly 20 years in Colorado, and only visiting southern California in the summer, I had forgotten.

Winter here means...

 Picked in the neighborhood here!

It's been mostly 70's and sunny since we arrived several days before Christmas. It may have actually hit 80 degrees on Christmas day! It's just not right, I tell ya : )

Boy have I been going through blogging withdrawals! I haven't had much time to visit around or post anything the last couple of weeks.

Today, I just had to find something pretty to work on and share with you. Had to!

I am out of my element here at my parents' house. I didn't even bring a glue gun! (haha).

I thought I'd go scrounge around outside a bit to see what I might come up with.

My nephew had been cutting branches from a tree in the backyard (the younger kids are having great fun climbing on them) so I started there for some inspiration.

I snipped some of the thinnest branches out of the pile and decided I'd put together a very simple and rustic twig wreath.

Being freshly cut, they were pretty flexible and I was able to easily bend them into a wreath shape.
The only thing I could find to secure the twigs were some white twist ties. My daughter colored them with a brown marker : )

Behind my mom's little barn style shed, I found a discarded and forgotten trellis that had almost fallen to pieces. I like that it still has some pieces of whatever vine was climbing on it at one time.

One woman's trash...

I love the chippy white finish.

I tapped it back together with a hammer as best I could, turned it upside down and hung my little rustic twig wreath on it.

I pulled another branch that still has some leaves on it through the trellis.

I found an old galvanized farm bucket (okay, I swiped it from the fireplace hearth) and an old rusted garden trowel and put them on a little stool my grandfather made as a boy.

Yep, this is winter in southern California. Pretty rough, huh?

We're heading home to Colorado in just a few days! My dad has been battling cancer for some time now, and it's so so difficult to leave my parents during such a hard time. I would sure appreciate your prayers for him, and our whole family right now.

See you soon from snowy Colorado, friends!
